Human Rights and Human Diversity: An Essay in the Philosophy of Human Rights.Alan John Mitchell Milne - 1986 - State University of New York Press.
He argues that an adequate idea of human rights must take such a diversity seriously, and unlike the UN Declaration, it must not presuppose Western institutions and values.

Politics, Wellbeing, and the Market.Alan John Mitchell Milne, Roger Crisp & Alistair Milne - 2001 - Palgrave-Macmillan.
In this work, Alan Milne builds on the argument of his earlier book Ethical Frontiers of the State that limits on governmental action are to be understood in terms of humanistic social ethics. Here Milne considers the role of the market in politics, and in particular the relation of the market to the obligations of government to advance human wellbeing. Issues covered include contingency in politics, the command economy, capitalism, the welfare state, inequality, and representative democracy.

Ethical frontiers of the state: an essay in political philosophy.Alan John Mitchell Milne - 1998 - New York: St. Martin's Press.
The moral justification for government is, that it is needed to promote the community's interest. What is that interest an interest in? Upon what basis can disagreements about the community's interest and individual interests be reconciled? Can democracy enable dissatisfaction with their reconciliation to be lived with? Perhaps, if people are prepared to meet the requirements of democratic citizenship. What are these requirements, and what is their justification? These are the questions with which this book is concerned.

    Desert, Effort and Equality.Heather Milne - 1986 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 3 (2):235-243.
Desert theories of distributive justice have been attacked on the grounds that they attempt to found large inequalities on morally arbitrary features of individuals: desert is usually classified as a meritocratic principle in contrast to the egalitarian principle that goods should be distributed according to need. I argue that there is an egalitarian version of desert theory, which focuses on effort rather than success, and which aims at equal levels of well‐being; I call it a ‘well‐being desert’ theory. It is (...)

Science, social theory and public knowledge.Alan Irwin - 2003 - Philadelphia: Open University Press. Edited by Mike Michael.
How might social theory, public understanding of science and science policy best inform one another? What have been the key features of science-society relations in the modern world? How are we to re-think science-society relations in the context of globalization, hybridity and changing patterns of governance? This topical and unique book draws together the three key perspectives on science-society relations: public understanding of science, scientific and public governance, and social theory. The book presents a series of case studies (including the (...)
